a list of standard terms and their meanings.
- Search Engine Optimisation (SEO):
The practice of making a website friendly to the search engines
so that they can catagorise it according to relevancy.
- Search Marketing:
Online marketing methods designed to convert visitors to
website's into paying customers.
- PPC (Pay Per Click):
Advertising model based on payment for each click received
on the ad to drive instant traffic to the site. The largest of these
being Google adwords.
- Organic Search:
Natural search engine results which list website's according
to relevancy and list them for free.
- Conversion Rate:
The number of users who visit a website verses the number
of users who perform a desired action. i.e. if you receive 1,000 visitors
and 100 sign up for your newsletter your conversion rate is 10%.
- On-Page Optimisation:
The process of building or revising a website so that search
engine spiders can read the content and catagorise the site accordingly.
This may include copy writing, image enhancement and modifying other
background code not seen by the end users.
- Off-Page Optimisation:
The process of building a link campaign to get links pointing
to a site. This is best achieved by getting links from other relevant
website's.
- HTML:
Hypertext Markup Language. The code used to build website's.
- Spiders:
Also known as web crawlers or bots, these are automated programs
that scan the web and provide information to search engines, usually
for the purpose of indexing website's.
- Client Acquisition:
The conversion from a potential client into a paying customer.
- Affiliate:
Those who advertise other peoples programs and/or services
on a commission only basis. When a transaction is made the affiliate
gets a percentage of the sale price.
- Merchant:
Providers of the products or service advertised by the affiliates.
- Traffic:
The number of visitors who come to a website.
